Farnsworth Family, 2020
Many years ago I was in a professional transitional period of my life. I had just moved my small family across the country without a job or any leads or connections of any kind. It just seemed like the the right thing to do. After a few months of looking for a technical writing position for a recent college graduate during a great recession, I met a hiring manager looking for an instructional designer and trainer. I explained my background and experience and was invited to interview.
During the interview, I brought a single coconut and placed it on the table between the hiring manager and myself. I made only subtle references to the coconut while answering the standard interview questions until finally, I was asked why I had brought a coconut to the interview.
"I'm willing to bet that you have not had anyone else bring a coconut to the interview and now you will always remember the guy who brought a coconut to an interview. Interviews are like training sessions. If you don't remember the training after the fact, then what is the point? If you don't remember the interviewee after the fact, then what is the point?"
Thus started my career as an Instructional Designer.
